How to Build a Personal Brand on Video Without Feeling Like a Cringe-Fest

Writer's picture: Liz ShortLiz Short

Putting yourself out there on video feels...awkward.

Cringey.

Like you're auditioning for the world’s judgiest talent show. 🥴

And if you're a recovering introvert-slash-social-media-lurker like me, you know the struggle.

But here's the thing: it's not the fear of being on camera that holds most of us back.

It's the fear of doing it wrong.

So how do you build your personal brand on video when you're more private by nature?

Let’s cut through the fluff with these THREE truths:

1️⃣ You’re the boss of what you share

No, building a personal brand doesn’t mean baring your soul or live-streaming your breakfast every day. You decide what’s relevant. Curate content that connects with your audience. Think of it like the highlight reel of your professional awesomeness, not your daily drama.

2️⃣ Strategy > Oversharing

Be intentional. Are you here to build credibility, attract clients, or show off your knowledge? Share content that supports those goals. Another video about your morning avocado toast? Unless you’re secretly launching a food channel, no one needs to see it.

3️⃣ Value is the MVP

Your audience doesn’t want to hear you monologuing about you. Instead, give them something they can actually use—whether it’s insight, advice, or a laugh. For me, I stick to leadership, GSD (Getting Stuff Done), and my journey with video and personal branding. Sure, I love Fast & Furious, but I don’t spend all day talking about Vin Diesel’s career choices. (Tempting, though.)

Boundaries Are Your Best Friend

Here's the kicker: you don’t have to live your life online to make an impact. You can still build a killer personal brand while keeping parts of your world offline.

If you’re thinking, “That’s great, but where do I even start?”

I get it.

I didn’t figure this out alone.

I leaned on people who helped me create a strategy and knew how to make videos and that gave me the confidence to just start.

And honestly, putting yourself out there isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up.

The reason you’re reading this right now?

I decided to stop hiding.

To start posting.

To get uncomfortable.

And to figure it out as I went.

If I can do it, trust me: you can too.

So stop overthinking and start doing.

The world (and LinkedIn) is waiting for your brilliance. ✌🏻
