Why Your Social Media Strategy Is Failing (Hint: It’s Not the Algorithm, It’s You)

Neon sign in dark setting showing a red speech bubble with a blue heart and "0" inside, symbolizing no likes or engagement. Social Media Strategy.

Let’s get one thing straight: numbers matter.

Metrics, analytics, KPIs, impressions...yes, they’re important.

But if you’re refreshing your feed to see if your last post got 17 likes or 27, I’ve got some news for you: you’re doing it wrong.

This obsession with vanity metrics has become the adult version of passing notes in class that say “Do they like me? Check yes or no.”

And let’s be honest, that energy doesn’t exactly scream “visionary leader.”

If you're trying to leverage social media to build your business or your career, here’s some tough love: Stop focusing on the numbers.

Likes, follows, comments, they're part of the game, sure.

But the BEST place to START is understanding your goals and plan to execute

.

(Yes, I repeated that for the folks in the back.)

If you’re not being strategic, you’re not going to see the results you’re looking for.

You can hack the algorithm all you want, but if your content has no soul, no clear intention: you’re just adding to the digital noise.

And no, a thousand recycled motivational quotes on Canva templates don’t count as “strategy.”

This is where leadership comes into play because leading in the digital space isn’t just about showing up.

It’s about showing up on purpose.

That’s where your personal branding steps in.

Not the cringey influencer kind (although there’s always room for a good ring light), but the kind that makes people say, “I trust them. I know what they stand for. I’d follow them into battle or at least into a budget meeting.”

Let me say it again for the metrics-chasers still clutching their spreadsheets: Stop focusing on how to hack the algorithm and START understanding why you're showing up in the first place.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want my audience to do with this post?

  • What value am I offering?

  • How does this reflect my brand and leadership style?

If you can’t answer those questions before you hit “post,” then all the likes in the world won’t move the needle for your business.

Here’s the kicker: Social media (and yes, even that eye-roll-inducing “personal brand”) is where cutting-edge businesses continue to find success.

Why?

Because people don’t connect to logos.

They connect to people.

Your company’s biggest asset is YOU.

If your lead funnel doesn’t include your face, your voice, and your leadership, you're missing out.

Full stop.

Look, I get it, it’s hard to know where to start.

The internet is loud.

Strategy feels elusive.

Everyone's screaming about engagement rates, content calendars, and trending audio clips.

But your very first step?

Say it with me now:

“The BEST place to START is understanding your goals and plan to execute.”

From there, everything else becomes much easier to align.

Your social media strategy should be an extension of your leadership, not a desperate plea for validation.

And trust me, your audience can tell the difference.

So the next time you start spiraling because your post didn’t “perform,” remember: performance is measured in impact, not impressions.

If one person reads your post and reaches out to work with you, that’s ROI.

That’s influence.

That’s leadership.

Stop obsessing over likes and start leading with purpose. A strong social media strategy starts with clear goals and authentic personal branding. Ready to cut through the noise and show up like a leader? Let's connect and build your strategy!
